therapy for adults in california

what you can hope for

helping you find your way forward

Success in therapy is not getting rid of all pain; it’s about identifying how you want to live and figuring out what it will take to get there. When we do that, we often begin to feel better.

  • Generalized Anxiety
  • Social Anxiety
  • Panic
  • Phobias
  • OCD

It’s normal to worry. But it doesn’t have to be the case that your worries are so pronounced that they limit your life. You might even ask family members to help carry the burden you feel. Over time, anxiety can shrink our worlds, leading us to shy away from activities that were once staples of our lifestyle. Daily life can become marked by dread over the next time we have to ____ . Is it a presentation at work? A trip to the doctor’s office for a blood draw? A weekly soccer game? Unaddressed, anxiety (and anxiety about anxiety) can cause us to limit, withdraw, and excuse ourselves. What kind of life do you want to live? Your answer to that is our starting point in treatment.

i work specifically with:

Having insomnia means you struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, and/or make it until your ideal wake-up time. The impact of these disruptions to your sleep are real, and may include your mood, memory, productivity, and physical health. I once called a washing machine a dishwasher because I was so sleep-deprived. The good news is that insomnia is very treatable in about 4-8 sessions, and research indicates that specialized therapy for insomnia is even more effective than taking medication for it.

High achievement and low stress are rarely mentioned in the same breath. If you’re used to operating at a high level, you may be able to keep up your performance even as your relationships, health, and free time suffer. Conversely, you may be feeling so burned out that you are considering taking medical leave from your job. The possibility of a performance improvement plan may have been mentioned. It’s time for us to assess things. I especially enjoy working with high-achievers in tech.

When you are standing at a precipice, it is common to rapidly spin your wheels—“Do I move or not? Sacrifice my relationship now for a career opportunity? Leave this job and its benefits for the uncertainty of the open market? Have this conversation with my family or not?” I excel at helping people think through options, possibilities, and the meaning of each. Spoiler: I will rarely tell you what to do, but I will help you organize your thinking, draw out your considerations, and come to a conclusion that makes sense for you.

Life happens. Our moods shift in response to difficult news and disappointments; that’s expected. If you find that your sadness seems to be more intense than others’, last longer, or feel inconsolable, let’s talk about depression. It is both the case that what you feel is completely normal (you are not alone) and that good care can help reduce your suffering. The bottom line: some people benefit from having a diagnosis (a name for their symptoms), and others just want to feel better and figure out a way forward. I’m trained to diagnose and treat, but I’m also a person who knows that sometimes being in the world is hard. However we describe what you’re experiencing, therapy can help.

Major moments of change are often uncertain, overwhelming, and isolating. They are also opportunities for learning and growth. Sessions provide space for you to explore your feelings about these changes, to grieve and to celebrate, and to make a plan for next steps.
